KUTKI or KATUKI or KUTAKI is probably the most commonly used Ayurvedic bitter tonic herb and has a place like Golden Seal in the natural medicine of India. It counters fevers, infections and any type of bacterial inflammations, and aids in detoxification of the blood. It is a good tonic to the liver, spleen, small intestine and other Pitta systems. Along with other bitter tonics like Gentien or Barberry, katuka is excellent for improving digestion and stimulating the flow of hydrochloric acid in the stomach.
One-half teaspoon of Katuka, along with one teaspoon honey and one teaspoon aloe vera gel taken three times a day is an excellent tonic for improving liver function. One-half teaspoon Katuka along with one-half teaspoon of Vidanga taken with one teaspoon of honey twice a day before meals helps eliminate pinworms and thread worms. One-half teaspoon of Katuka along with an equal amount of Turmeric taken before meals regulates blood sugar in diabetic patients.
